Ireland Student Visa from India: Step-by-Step Application Guide (2027)

Last updated: 2 November 2026. Rupee figures use €1 = ₹106 (ECB reference rate, 30 October 2026) and are rounded.

Applying for an Ireland student visa from India takes one online form, one VFS appointment and a thick folder of documents.

It sounds simple. But a single missing letter can cost you weeks, or a refusal.

The rules are spread across the Irish immigration website, the New Delhi embassy pages and a VFS checklist.

Some of them even disagree with each other.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to fill in AVATS, book VFS, build your document file, track your decision and what to do once you land in Ireland.

In a Hurry? Read This Quick TL;DR Summary

How Does an Ireland Student Visa from India Work?

If you’re coming to study in Ireland for more than 3 months, you need a long term study visa (ISD, long term study visa).

The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi calls this a “D category” visa.

Officials in New Delhi make the decision. VFS Global only handles appointments, documents and passports.

A Minister of State confirmed this in a written Dáil answer in April 2026 (Oireachtas, 14 April 2026).

Your course must also be on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ISD, ILEP).

The visa gets you to the Irish border. Your actual right to stay comes later, when you register for your IRP.

Our guide to Irish immigration stamps explains Stamp 2 and what comes after it.

When Should You Apply for Your Study Visa?

ISD says to apply up to 3 months before you travel.

The New Delhi checklist is more generous. It says study applications are accepted up to 4 months before your travel date (NDVO checklist, version 26 March 2026).

Lodging inside the 3-month window keeps you safe under both rules.

For summer 2026, the embassy warned that files lodged less than 3 weeks before the course start couldn’t be guaranteed a decision (Embassy of Ireland, processing times).

For a September intake, aim to lodge in May or June. Have your offer and fee payment ready before then.

How Do You Apply? A Step-by-Step Guide

The embassy’s process for Indian residents has the same shape every time (Embassy of Ireland, visas for Ireland).

1. Accept Your Offer and Pay Your Fees

You need a letter of acceptance before anything else.

If your fees are under €6,000, pay them in full. If they’re higher, pay at least €6,000 (₹6.36 lakh) before you apply.

Pay by bank transfer to the college’s Irish account, or through an approved service like Pay to Study.

2. Fill In the AVATS Online Form

Create your application on AVATS, the Irish government’s online visa system.

Choose a long stay (D) visa with study as your reason for travel, and answer every question fully and honestly.

AVATS then gives you a Summary Application Form and a Visa Application Transaction Number. Print it, sign it and date it.

3. Pick Single or Multiple Entry and Pay

The embassy charges ₹5,300 for a single-entry visa and ₹9,000 for a multiple-entry one.

The fees in euro are €60 and €100 (ISD, visa fees).

In India, you pay VFS when you book your appointment. The VFS service fee is charged on top of this.

Neither the visa fee nor the VFS fee is refunded if you are refused or withdraw.

Here’s the money to line up in India before you lodge:

Item EUR INR (approx.)
Visa fee (single / multiple entry) €60 / €100 ₹5,300 / ₹9,000 + VFS fee
Tuition paid before applying (minimum) €6,000 ₹6.36 lakh
Living-cost funds to show €10,000 ₹10.6 lakh
IRP registration after you land €300 ₹31,800
Student health insurance (from) €177–€229 a year ₹18,800–₹24,300

Our cost of studying guide adds tuition, rent and flights for a full first-year budget.

4. Book Your VFS Appointment

Indian residents lodge at a VFS Global visa application centre (VAC). There are 11 of them:

  • Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai and Cochin
  • Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata and Mumbai
  • New Delhi and Pune

Book through the VFS Global Ireland site for India, which also lists centre addresses and optional paid services.

5. Give Your Biometrics

Residents of India aged 5 and over must give fingerprints at the VAC, unless exempt (ISD, biometrics).

All ten fingers are scanned when you hand over your documents.

Don’t turn up with henna or cut fingers. VFS won’t accept your application until they’ve healed or faded.

6. Submit Your Documents and Passport

VFS scans your originals and hands them back. Your passport goes to the embassy and stays there until a decision.

The only exception is VFS’s optional “Keep My Passport While Applying” service.

Don’t plan to send extra papers later. The embassy won’t accept post-submission documents unless a visa officer asks for them (Embassy of Ireland, visa documentation).

7. Wait, and Answer Unknown Calls

The embassy may phone you or your sponsor to check details.

It publishes its number as 011 49403200, so answer calls from it.

What Documents Do You Need for an Irish Study Visa?

This table combines the ISD document list with the New Delhi checklist.

Document What it must show
Signed AVATS summary form Printed, signed and dated

2 photos Colour, 35–38mm × 45–50mm, white or light grey background, AVATS number and signature on the back
Letter of acceptance Full-time course with at least 15 hours of daytime tuition a week, total fees and fees paid
Proof of fee payment Bank transfer to the college’s Irish account, or a Pay to Study receipt
English test result Issued within 2 years of your course start
Academic documents Marksheets, degree certificates and transcripts
Proof of funds Ready access to €10,000 (₹10.6 lakh), 6 months of statements, Summary of Finances form
Sponsor documents Letter of support, proof of family link, sponsor’s statements and income proof
Private medical insurance Through the college (named in your acceptance letter) or your own policy
Application letter Your reasons, plans and commitments (see below)
Gap explanation Every gap since your last full-time study, with job evidence
Previous refusals Original refusal letters from any country

Everything must be original, legible, verifiable and in English. Self-translations aren’t accepted.

Business letters need official letterhead, a landline number and a handwritten signature (ISD).

1. English Test Scores

For degree-level courses, the visa minimums include IELTS Academic 5.0, TOEFL iBT 61 and Duolingo 75 (ISD, English requirements).

Your university will usually ask for more. Its requirement is the one you actually have to meet.

2. Proof of Funds, in Brief

You need ready access to at least €10,000 for year one, shown through 6 months of statements.

Every sponsor needs statements too, and large deposits must be explained.

Our full guide to proof of funds for an Ireland student visa covers loans, FDs and what isn’t accepted.

3. Medical Insurance

ISD says you need private medical insurance, arranged by your college or by you (ISD, private medical insurance).

The New Delhi checklist says travel and medical insurance is “only required if visa is approved”.

The safe move is to include proof if your college already arranges cover. If not, ask your college or VFS which rule applies before you buy.

For year one, travel insurance can work at registration if it covers at least €25,000 (₹26.5 lakh) each for accident and disease.

4. Academic and Sponsor Documents

Bring the marksheets and certificates that prove you can follow the course.

Your sponsor’s letter should say how they’re related to you and what they’ll pay. Add proof of that relationship.

The embassy says DigiLocker documents are easier to verify, which can speed things up.

How Should You Write Your Application Letter?

ISD calls it an application letter. Most Indian students call it a cover letter or SOP.

It must include:

  • Your full name and postal address
  • Why you want to study in Ireland
  • Why your new course doesn’t follow your past study or work, if it doesn’t, with evidence
  • Your planned arrival and departure dates
  • Any family members in Ireland or elsewhere in the EU

It must also commit you to obey your visa conditions, not rely on public services, and leave before your permission expires.

1. Explain Every Gap

Account for all time since your last full-time course, right up to your application.

Give your full work history with dates. Back it up with offer letters, relieving letters and payslips.

A short, honest explanation beats an unexplained blank year.

How Long Does an Ireland Student Visa from India Take?

The New Delhi embassy’s processing times (updated 17 September 2026) are:

Stage Usual time
Delhi VAC to embassy Next working day
Other VACs to embassy 2 working days
Study visa decision 4–8 weeks
Study visa appeal 6 calendar months
Return by Blue Dart from Delhi VAC Usually within 2 working days

Processing times count working days from when the embassy receives your file. They exclude weekends and embassy closures.

They don’t include the wait for a VFS slot or courier time, so add both.

The embassy doesn’t give status updates, so don’t email to chase your application.

Biometric clearance, document checks and phone interviews can push you past 8 weeks.

How Will You Get Your Decision and Passport Back?

Every morning by about 11:00 IST, the embassy updates a spreadsheet of visa decisions made so far that year. You can check your result with our Ireland visa decision checker for New Delhi, which searches the Embassy’s latest list by your 8-digit number.

Search it for your AVATS reference number. It says “Approved” or “Refused”.

The list up to 29 October 2026 showed 35,129 approvals and 6,321 refusals across all visa types, not just study.

For study visas alone, India filed 7,047 applications in 2026 up to 30 September, and 3,067 were refused. That’s more refusals than in all of 2025 (2,940) (Dáil written answer, 22 October 2026).

Your passport then goes back to the Delhi VAC and is sent to you by Blue Dart.

If you’re refused, the decision letter sets out the reasons. ISD sends these by letter or email (ISD, visa decisions).

If you have the right to appeal, the letter explains how. Our Ireland student visa refusal guide explains the codes and your options.

What Should You Do After Your Visa Is Approved?

First, check the visa sticker. Your name, passport number and dates must be correct.

Then book your flight. The embassy advises against booking before a decision.

1. Clear Immigration at the Airport

At the border, an immigration officer will ask about your stay (ISD, entry at the border).

Carry these in your hand luggage (ISD, border documents):

  • Passport with your visa
  • Your letter of acceptance and fee receipts
  • Proof of funds and medical insurance
  • Your accommodation address
  • Copies of your AVATS summary and application letter

Even with a visa, you can be refused entry if the officer isn’t satisfied.

If you’re allowed in, you get a landing stamp of up to 3 months.

2. Register for Your IRP

You must register before that stamp expires. Book your appointment as soon as you arrive.

Don’t leave Ireland before you register. Visa-required nationals, which includes Indians, can’t re-enter without a new visa (ISD, registration FAQs).

Our step-by-step guide to IRP registration in Ireland covers documents and appointments.

3. Sort Your Housing Early

You’ll need a confirmed address for the border and for registration.

Our guide to student accommodation in Ireland covers costs and scam warnings.

What Mistakes Get Indian Students Refused?

Most refusals come from fixable errors:

  • Paying too little: less than €6,000 paid, or no proof in the acceptance letter.
  • Unexplained money: big recent deposits with no source.
  • Hidden refusals: not declaring a past refusal from any country can mean a refusal and a ban of up to 5 years.
  • Unexplained gaps: blank years with no work evidence.
  • Old test scores: English results more than 2 years old at course start.
  • Wrong photos: wrong size, background, or no AVATS number on the back.
  • Late filing: lodging weeks before your course starts.
  • Damaged passport: the embassy can withdraw your application without a refund.
  • Missed calls: ignoring a call from the embassy.

The Bottom Line: Is the Ireland Student Visa from India Hard to Get?

Not if your file is complete on the day you lodge it.

Pay your fees, show your funds and explain every gap.

Apply early, give your fingerprints, then watch the decisions list.

Why risk weeks of delay over a missing letter or an old photo?

A tidy, honest file is the best thing you can do for your Ireland student visa from India.
