IELTS requirements for Ireland look simple until you compare twelve universities side by side.
Most ask for 6.5 overall, but the minimum band, the accepted tests and the waivers all differ.
Galway has dropped Duolingo, for example, while UCD and DCU accept your CBSE English mark for undergraduate entry.
One wrong assumption can cost you a test retake of ₹19,000 or a delayed offer.
In this guide, you’ll learn the IELTS score each Irish university wants for 2027 entry, the TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo equivalents, the course exceptions, the Class 12 and degree waivers, the visa rules and the test fee in India.

What Are the IELTS Requirements for Ireland in 2027?
The table below shows each university’s general requirement for IELTS Academic.

| Trinity College Dublin | 6.5 (6.0) | 6.5 (6.0) |
| University College Dublin | 6.5 (6.0) | 6.5 (6.0) |

TU Dublin, for example, publishes PG scores per programme, and its Data Science course asks for 6.5 with 6.0 in each band.
Only IELTS Academic counts, and UL states clearly that General Training is not accepted.
What Are the TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo and Cambridge Equivalents?
The IELTS requirements for Ireland have direct equivalents in other tests, but the conversion is not the same everywhere.
PTE is the clearest example: Trinity wants 69, while UL accepts 61 for the same IELTS 6.5.
This table shows the standard postgraduate equivalents, with the minimum per section in brackets.
| University | TOEFL iBT | PTE Academic | Duolingo | Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 |

| TUS | 4.5 (3.5) | 56–65 | 120–125 | Not listed |
TOEFL moved to a new 1–6 band scale for tests taken from 21 January 2026, so check which scale your score uses.
Trinity, UCD and UCC accept the TOEFL Home Edition, while DCU and Maynooth do not.
Which Courses Need a Higher IELTS Score?
Professional and language-heavy courses often ask for 7.0 or a higher minimum band.
1. Medicine and Health
- UCC’s College of Medicine and Health asks undergraduates for 6.5 in every band, and Speech and Language Therapy needs 7.0.
- Galway’s first-year Medicine and its MSc Clinical Research both need 6.5 in every band.
- UCC’s MSc Audiology and MSc Diagnostic Radiography need 7.0, and Radiography needs 7.0 in every band.
2. Nursing
- Galway’s BSc Nursing and Midwifery needs 7.0 with 6.5 in each band.
- TUS Year 1 Nursing needs IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5, and only IELTS is accepted.
- UCC’s non-EU MSc Nursing needs 6.5 in every band, and accepts the OET as an alternative.
3. Law
UCD’s LLM General asks for 6.5 overall, with 6.5 in reading and writing.
UCD can also set higher options of 7.0 or 7.5 for some master’s courses.
4. Business, Media and Languages
- Trinity’s higher Band C is 7.0 with 6.5 in each band, used by some courses, so check your course page.
- Galway asks 7.0 for its MA in Journalism, English, Film and Global Media.
- DCU’s School of Communications wants 6.5 in writing and speaking.
5. Computing and Data
Galway’s MSc courses in AI, data analytics and cybersecurity need 6.5 in writing, not just 6.0.
Can Your CBSE or ISC Class 12 English Score Replace IELTS?
Sometimes, but mostly for undergraduate entry, and only at a few universities.
| University | Class 12 English accepted? | Indian degree waiver for PG? |
|---|---|---|
| Trinity | No, CBSE/ISC is not on its list | You may request one with a letter; the course director decides |
| UCD | Yes, 80% in English | At the programme board’s discretion |
| UCC | No Indian board rule published | No, India is not on its exempt-country list |
| Galway | Yes, 70% (75% for IELTS 7.0 courses), but not from many states | Only for degrees from an English-speaking country |
| UL | No waiver on its India page | Only for study where English is the official language |
| DCU | Yes, 80% in English | Only in exceptional circumstances |
| Maynooth | No | No, India is not on its list |
| TU Dublin | Not stated, so plan for a test | Possibly, at the university’s discretion |
| ATU | Not on its accepted list, so plan for a test | No, it does not accept medium of instruction letters |
Galway’s 70% rule covers CBSE, CISCE and four state boards, and it needs a Digilocker verification document.
It does not apply to students from states including Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar.
An English-medium letter from an Indian college rarely works on its own, so plan for a test.
How Should You Read a Course Page?
The university-wide table is your starting point, not your final answer.
1. Find the Course-Specific Line
Search the course page for “English language” and note the overall score and the minimum band.
If the page says “or equivalent”, open the university’s English page for the exact TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo score.
2. Check the Test Date Rule
Work backwards from your September 2027 start date to see whether an old score still counts.
3. Email Admissions If Anything Is Unclear
Ask in writing, and keep the reply with your application documents.
How Long Is Your IELTS Score Valid for Irish Universities?
Most universities accept scores issued within 2 years before your course starts.
UCD is stricter on dates: for September 2027 entry, results must date from 1 February 2025 or later.
Trinity and UCC accept the IELTS One Skill Retake, but UCD and Maynooth do not.
UCD, DCU and TU Dublin also require results from a single sitting.
Choosing a city too? See our guides to studying in Dublin and Galway.
UCC sets no time limit on Cambridge C1 and C2 certificates.
Do You Need IELTS for the Irish Student Visa?
You need proof of English from an approved test provider, but it doesn’t have to be IELTS.
Immigration Service Delivery’s visa English standards for degree courses are much lower than university entry scores.
| Test | Visa minimum for degree courses |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic or UKVI | 5.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 61 |
| PTE Academic | 30 |
| Duolingo | 75 |
| Cambridge | First Certificate pass |
The certificate must be issued within 2 years of your course start date.
The visa application asks for a certificate from the test provider itself.
So even if a university waives the test, you may still need a score for your visa.
UCC, UL, Maynooth and MTU all warn about this on their English pages.
Our Ireland student visa guide covers the full document checklist.
What If Your IELTS Score Is Too Low?
You have three realistic options if you’re a little short.
1. Retake One Skill
If one band is low, a One Skill Retake costs less than a full test in India.
Check first, because UCD and Maynooth do not accept retake results.
2. Join a Pre-Sessional English Course
- Trinity runs a 10-week pre-sessional programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- UCC’s Language Centre offers 6-, 12- and 16-week pre-sessional courses.
- UCD accepts its pre-master’s or pre-sessional programme at overall grade C+.
- Galway accepts its pre-sessional or pre-master’s with 70% overall and 65% in each module.
- UL lets offer holders who fall short take pre-sessional classes at its Language Centre.
- MTU also accepts recognised pre-sessional routes, so ask the admissions team.
3. Know the Visa Rules for an English Course
Immigration allows a preparatory English course of up to 6 months before your degree.
You must submit a study plan with both courses’ dates.
You must also pay the English course fees and your first year’s degree fees before applying.
How Much Does IELTS Cost in India in 2026?
IDP is the sole IELTS provider in India, so you book every test through IDP.
These are the current fees on IDP India’s booking page.
| Test | Fee in INR | Approx. in EUR |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS on Computer (Academic) | ₹19,000 | €179 |
| IELTS on Paper (Academic) | ₹19,000 | €179 |
| IELTS for UKVI | ₹19,250 | €182 |
| One Skill Retake | ₹12,650 | €119 |
You don’t need IELTS for UKVI for Ireland, because the standard Academic test is accepted.
Add this cost to your budget alongside the visa fee and tuition deposit in our cost of studying in Ireland guide.
Which IELTS Score Should You Aim For?
Aim for 7.0 with no band below 6.5 if you can.
If you meet only the bare IELTS requirements for Ireland, one weak band can still block your offer.
That clears the standard requirement at every university in this guide, and most higher course bars too.
A stronger score also helps if you plan to apply for the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship.
Then shortlist your universities with our guide to the best universities in Ireland for Indian students.
The Bottom Line: Is IELTS 6.5 Enough for Ireland?
For most courses, yes: IELTS requirements for Ireland centre on 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
Nursing, medicine, speech therapy and some media and business courses need 7.0.
Why gamble on a waiver when one test can cover your offer and your visa?
Check your exact course page, book your test early, and keep your score under two years old.
